Ride Lake Superior - great view

Embarking on a ride around the world’s largest freshwater lake leaves no room for shortcuts. Prepare yourself for a remarkable 2,300-kilometre journey as you navigate the captivating shores of Lake Superior, traversing through the stunning regions of Ontario, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

And let’s remember the adventure begins before you reach your destination, as every kilometre adds to the thrill and excitement. In our case, the ten-day early September trip from Toronto covered 4,000 unforgettable kilometres. If you crave even more exhilaration, additional options exist to satiate your wanderlust. Extend your ride along the captivating Grand Algoma Tour or take a side trip to the mesmerizing Sleeping Giant Provincial Park.

What will it be, waterfalls, beaches, historic sights or interesting towns? The biggest challenge of the Ride Lake Superior experience is time, time to see it all. There are the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, where giant tankers pass before your eyes, the upper falls in Tahquamenon Falls State Park are a relatively easy walk in moto boots and so impressive. Be sure to partake in the Quincy Smelter Tour and discover the area’s copper mining history. Check out the murals along the streets in Ashland, Wisconsin and the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth. There is the Split Rock Lighthouse in Minnesota, the Terry Fox Monument near Thunder Bay, the Winnie the Pooh Memorial and the Wawa Goose; the list goes on.

Ride Lake Superior Hwy Scenic Views

Keeping your eyes on the road is easier said than done when every crest of a hill or bend in the road offers another spectacular vista. While the views keep coming, some spots are must-stop locations for the whole experience. Brockway Mountain Lookout above Copper Harbor is such a place, perhaps best enjoyed as the sun rises over Lake Superior. Enger Watch Tower in Deluth is worth the ride up the hill for the grand view of the city below. Take in the rugged coastline in Minnesota at Split Rock Lighthouse. In Ontario, stop at Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park, the Nipigon Lookout Tower and Agawa Bay Scenic Lookout in Lake Superior Provincial Park.

During our ride in early September, the weather conditions along Lake Superior unveiled a captivating spectrum of diversity. We experienced scorching heat with temperatures climbing up to 34C, only to step out into a -2C morning a couple of days later.

The early days of the month may retain a lingering summer warmth, with clear skies and a gentle breeze; however, as September progresses, the Great Lake’s influence becomes more pronounced. Cool winds sweep across the expansive waters, bringing sudden temperature fluctuations and the potential for dramatic storms. Rain showers dance on the lake’s surface, creating a moody ambiance contrasting with the fading summer’s lingering warmth. Fog blankets the coastline in the early mornings, shrouding the landscape in a mysterious allure. No matter when you embark on a ride around Lake Superior, the interplay of sun, rain, and wind showcases nature’s transformations.
